Atlantis

Atlantis

Miami

Built in 1982 by Arquitectonica.

The Atlantis’s playful imagery blended the lighthearted approach of Miamii Beach’s Modernism at midcentury with the ornamental shorthand of Postmodernism to the scale and dimension of a new generation of high-rise construction. A central element of its monumentality was the brash use of form and color, once legible across the skyline. A signature element is the building’s thinness and length, resulting in an organizational plan that included multiple elevator cores and apartments with both north and south exposures. The building’s most famous feature is the sky-court, a multistory void cut through the building and populated with representative symbols of leisure and whimsy such as a whirlpool, palm tree and a red spiral stair framed by a wavy yellow wall.
