Biltmore Hotel

Biltmore Hotel

Coral Gables

Built in 1926 by Shulte and Weaver, 1926; Renovation: Coral Gables Biltmore Corporation, Joseph Grassie, General Partner, Joseph Herndon, VP and Project Director, 1985 and 1986; Country Club Renovation: Ferendino, Grafton, Spillis Candela and Ralph Warburton, 1980.

Created by the designer of the Freedom Tower, the Biltmore opened in 1926. A 300 foot tall replica of the Giralda Tower of Seville was the centerpiece of the structure organized around a central courtyard. When completed, the building was the tallest building in Florida, with the biggest swimming pool. It became an Army-Airforce Regional Hospital in 1941 and after WWII served as the University of Miami School of Medicine teaching hospital. Until 1968 it formed part of the Veteran’s Administration. Fearing demolition, preservationists convinced the City of CoralGables to purchase and renovate the landmark hotel which reopened in 1987.
