The Freedom Tower is a monument of Florida’s 1920’s boomtime Mediterranean Revival architecture style inspired by Bertram Goodhue’s 1915 Panama-California Exposition in San Diego. Shultze and Weaver modeled the tower on the Giralda Tower of Sevile, Spain and blended the Moorish through Baroque epochs into a hybrid style unique to 1920’s Florida. Administration leased the building for use as the Cuban Refugee Center and it affectionately became known as the ‘Freedom Tower’, and is currently used as an exhibition venue.
