SLS Hotel / Former Grossinger Beach Hotel & Ritz Plaza Hotel

SLS Hotel / Former Grossinger Beach Hotel & Ritz Plaza Hotel

Miami Beach

Built in 1940 by Lawrence Murray Dixon (1940) with renovations Beilinson Architect (1990).

The Ritz Plaza is Lawrence Murray Dixon’s most fully realized interpretation of the skyscraper aesthetic. The stepped massing of the Collins Avenue facade culminates in the two piers of the central window bay, which shoot up from the parapet. Its vertical thrust is offset by the taller elevator shaft behind, whose telescoping form, convincingly camoufl aged in a composition of rectangular and cylindrical volumes, meshes the traditional imagery of a rooftop lantern with the modern suggestion of a smokestack. The narrow south facade produces a different effect, with a pair of monumental striped Classical pilasters rising full height from above the side entrance to an attic story formed by extending the two top corner windows an extra bay.
