Ilona

Ilona

Miami Beach

Built in 2003 by Oppenheim Architecture+Design.

The Ilona is a notable example of the urban infill projects that are proliferating in the Ocean Beach Historic District. Rising 5 stories, its white volumes, glass planes, and expansive terraces derive from Miami Beach’s own synthesis of modernity and climate-consciousness. The Ilona is distinguished, however, by its elongated hexagonal body, which breaks from South Beach’s orthogonal form and space traditions. Tapered like a ship’s hull, partly detached from the surrounding fabric, and raised off the ground by means of a recessed base, it exhibits something of the nautical imagery popular here in the 1930s and 1940s. Generous patio spaces on either side are screened with perforated aluminum bards on the lower floors, extending the reach of the facade and integrating with the street wall of the surrounding district. The focal point of the street facade is a multistory window framed with a wide stucco band.
