Unitarian Universalist Church
Jacksonville
Built in 1965 by Robert C. Broward, FAIA.

Jacksonville's Unitarian Universalist Church reflects the influences of Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin, where Bob studied and worked.
The organic architecture of the church also evokes the underlying principles of the Unitarian Universalist movement, such as "respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part."
The mass of the sanctuary and community room below is de-emphasized by graceful buttresses on the western side, which seemingly grow from the earth.
The church was built on a hill overlooking a pond that resulted from fill-dirt excavations for the Arlington Expressway. The only solid ground was atop the hill.
Various features of the structure are designed to emphasize nature. For example, skylights along the length of the nave highlight the changing character of sunlight during the four seasons. Where possible, materials have been left unpainted and natural in appearance.
