After 15 years of sitting empty, the historic federal courthouse, listed on the national register of historic places, was finally redeveloped into a boutique hotel called Le Meridien. The design team and developers salvaged many of the original fixtures and material for the enjoyment of future hotel guests. It is a grand building with granite columns, marble floors, brass fixtures and solid oak door frames.
The redevelopment of the historic federal courthouse was a priority for mayor Buckhorn. The building risked demolition by neglect and its revitalization was seen as in important step in the redevelopment of the northeast section of downtown Tampa.
