Named after the local Lake Hell ‘n Blazes on the upper reaches of the St. Johns River, the downtown
Melbourne Hell ‘n Blazes Brewing Company is a new craft brewery that celebrates the historical heritage
of its physical home and of the local region. The brewery’s building is a historically reminiscent readaptation
of a century-old heavy-timber framed hardware store that had been expanded and modified
over time.
When the brewery owner purchased the building, it was structurally sound but showing its age: the
brick façade was covered by 1970's flagstone veneer and paint; the second story windows had been
stuccoed over; the original operable skylights had been covered; and the list goes on. Rather than
renovating the building in typical economical fashion, the owner and his architect instead dedicated
their efforts to restore the building to its original architectural character and transform it into a special
gem for downtown.
The building sits on the east side of railroad tracks that had, until the renovation, defined the eastern
edge of the downtown. The renovated building now provides an engaging architectural and social
environment to draw people further east, in result extending the downtown, providing a needed
stimulus for neighboring businesses, and prompting a renewed community interest in downtown
Melbourne and its history.
